On Friday night, you may have heard strains of Hawaiian greetings and smelled the enticing aroma of pineapple wafting through the air on the WTN campus. The reason for this luau was Literacy Night! Pre-kindergarten through 1st grade students and their parents gathered together to create stories, work on projects, and eat delicious tropical food. The evening was capped off by a reading of Aloha Dolores by Ms. Bednar and The Rainbow Fish by Mrs. Fetzer. And then a special guest arrived--the WT Bear! It was a fantastic evening that made us all wish for summer. Thank you to Mrs. Malack for organizing the entire event and all the teachers who helped!

On Tuesday, North students and teachers climbed onto buses headed in the direction of the city campus. They were on their way to see Jon Agee speak and (draw!) about his experiences writing and illustrating his many picture and wordplay books. Once there, everyone filed into the Willis Room, where Jon was already hard at work filling blank paper with his drawings. With a few lines and shapes, Jon turned a white sheet of paper into a world where hamburgers fly and polar bears romp in blizzards. He told stories about his new puppy, his first book, and his method for creating palindromes and anagrams. The WT fifth graders were especially fortunate--they had a chance to work together to create their own palindrome illustrations, complete a "Jon Agee Quiz," and have their pictures taken. Another lucky, essay-writing few joined Jon for lunch, where they learned about why he draws so many of his characters with mustaches! After the presenations, Jon signed all of the books ordered by students, giving them a lasting souvenir to remember the day. Thanks, WT students, for participating in the author visit day! And, most of all, thank you to Jon Agee for giving us a glimpse into the life of an author! After the author visit, students made thank you notes that we will mail to Jon. They attempted to create their own anagrams and palindromes to try and impress him!
Have you read Z Goes Home by Jon Agee? WTN kindergartners have! In the book, different everyday objects are transformed into letters of the alphabet. So in kindergarten, we took our own everyday objects and turned them into letters of the alphabet too! |
