Earlier in May we celebrated Children's Book Week by celebrating the staff of WTN's favorite books (which was appropriate, since it was also Teacher Appreciation Week!). I asked teachers what their favorite books were as children, and also put out a call for photographs and artifacts that best represented their childhoods. The result was this bulletin board: Many teachers brought in the actual book they used to read (and reread, in most cases) as children! It was a nostalgic stroll through memory lane, and both students and teachers had a great time trying to guess who liked what book and who had the best bowl cut and fashion sense as a child.

Last week 1st graders led the Morning Meeting, and their theme was architecture around the world. First we learned about different structures through a PowerPoint presentation that the 1st graders created (complete with amazing sounds, transitions, and pictures). Then the 1st graders read letters they had written from Flat Stanley's perspective, narrating his experiences at the different buildings. Finally, group then had to guess what structure Flat Stanley was describing. The meeting ended with a rousing rendition of a special architecture song created by Mrs. Hanczar and sung to the tune of "B-I-N-G-O" ("There was a builder, built a house, and he worked very hard..."). In the end, we all learned so much about famous buildings around the world. Thanks, 1st graders!
A new species of frog was found in the library! This interesting new species hides behind library books and waits patiently to jump out and scare unsuspecting librarians. The brave explorer who discovered this new species of frog.
You've probably heard of the Caldecott and the Newbery Medals given out to outstanding children's books very year (and if you haven't, here are this year's winners of the Caldecott (http://www.ala.org/awardsgrants/awards/6/detail) and the Newbery (http://www.ala.org/awardsgrants/awards/15/detail). But have you ever heard of the 2nd Grade Book Awards?
Every year, 2nd graders pick out their favorite books in the WTN library. This comes after reading countless books, writing reviews, and rating books on a 5-star scale. It's a pretty intense process, fraught with heated discussion on what merits a good book. In the end, each 2nd grader selects a book and creates their own award to give that book. These awards are placed inside that book so that every student who reads that book in the years to come will know that it is special. An awards ceremony was held on Friday, May 4th to present these awards. Here are some pictures from the ceremony and a few samples of the medal given out: |
